A new beginning in the Canary Islands

September 25, 2025

The idea of founding an international community had been under discussion at the Assumption since 2012. This vision became a reality after the 2024 General Chapter, with the decision to respond to a request from the Province of Spain and to the urgent migration challenges posed by the West African Atlantic Route. Following the Chapter’s decision, the Religious of the Assumption have opened a new community now located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Sr. Rekha emphasized the prophetic witness of an intercultural community living in harmony as Religious of the Assumption. And while many pressing needs exist—particularly around migration—one possible focus will be to support young migrants over the age of 18. These young people, once protected as minors, often find themselves suddenly alone and vulnerable upon reaching adulthood, left to navigate life on the streets without support.

The first sisters to arrive—Asunción, Vénantie, and Alma are preparing to begin this mission. “This initial period,” they share, “is a time of discernment: to build community life, embrace internationality, and begin to clarify the mission. For now, one priority is language learning for the sisters who do not yet speak Spanish.”

“We are called to go out, be near those in need, look and listen, and, most importantly, seek support from the Church and from organizations already engaged in this vital work.”

The sisters explain: “Key diocesan figures and friends of the Assumption have already joined us, offering their support and expressing deep gratitude for this new commitment. Their message was clear: they are ready to accompany us in discerning how best to respond to the migration reality in the Canary Islands, in line with our charism and possibilities.”

The community shared their hopes for the immediate future, while making a request: “We ask for your prayers and support as we continue to strengthen our community bonds. May we learn Spanish well, so we can truly connect and communicate with the people around us. And may the Holy Spirit guide us in discerning how and where we are called to carry out our mission.”
