The Season of Creation is held every year from September the 1st through to October 4, when it opens and closes with online services. During this time, the worlds 2.2 billion Christians are invited to pray and care for creation, and this unites the global Christian family around one shared purpose.
History
September 1st was proclaimed as a day of prayer for creation for the Eastern Orthodox Church by ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios 1 in 1989. It was embraced by other major Christian European churches in 2001, and by Pope Francis for the Roman Catholic Church in 2015. In recent years many Christian churches have begun celebrating the Season of Creation between September 1st and October 4th the feast of St Francis, Catholic patron saint of those who promote ecology. Several statements over the past few years have called the faithful to observe this month-long session, the last one being the World Council of Churches in 2008.
The theme for this year 2024 is to hope and act with creation, and the symbol, inspired by Romans 8 :19-25, represents the first fruits of hope. Active hope in our Christian communities can be see and experienced in the care of creation hearing the voice of the poor, hearing the cries of the earth.
In conclusion the Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration., conversation and commitment together.
Shalom Irene
